Grid Connections Engineer

We are looking for a Grid Connections Engineer to join our Engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and enthusiastic candidate to join a fast-growing renewable energy business as we head into the next phase of growth.

The Grid Connections Engineer will join a small, agile team that is integral to the success of Innova. They will play an essential role in managing and leading the grid connections process. Throughout the project lifecycle you will be managing the engagement and relationship with Distribution and Transmission Network Operators and the System Operator, while resolving complex engineering challenges to obtain the optimal connection strategy for the project.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist in finding potential new sites across the UK for deployment of solar, wind, storage, or other opportunities across the distribution and transmission network
  • Preparing and advising on grid applications to DNOs and NGESO
  • Analysing grid offers and working with the network operators and external grid advisors to mitigate risks and achieve cost efficient grid connections
  • Identify and vet emerging technologies and techniques to optimise grid connections and ensure they comply with distribution and grid codes
  • Assisting with feasibility studies for Private Wire connections, including behind the meter set up, route to export, and grid capacity studies
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies on existing and future connections
  • Assisting with project valuations and supporting due diligence on acquisition opportunities and project sales
  • Monitoring and communicating changes in legislation and policies that impact the business
  • Representing Innova and the Grid Connections team at industry events

The role will be based from our office in London Waterloo, with occasional visits to our Cheltenham office and project sites as required. We offer hybrid working, with most employees splitting their week between home and office.

About you

  • Electrical engineering background with electrical or engineering degree qualification (Masters preferred) or relevant experience
  • Worked within the energy industry for at least 3 years , with direct experience in managing grid connections for type B-D generators (from a developer, network operator or other role with significant exposure to the process from application to operation) preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of power system studies, distribution and/or transmission network operations preferred
  • Renewable energy experience preferred
  • Very organised, with an ability to autonomously manage multiple highly technical projects at the same time and meet individual targets
  • Self-starter willing to work within a small and agile team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Desire to help develop and grow a core function within the company
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
