Novus Renewable Services (Novus) and Innova Renewables are pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for a new 10MWp solar project with energy storage and a new primary substation for the nearby Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works, operated by Dwr Cymru, also known as Welsh Water.
The project will be funded, constructed and managed by Innova Renewables and will provide zero carbon renewable power directly to Dwr Cymru, as well as securing their supply from the electricity grid.
The site was identified for development due to its proximity to the Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works and its identification as a suitable location for solar development in the local authority’s emerging planning policy.
The solar project includes a new primary substation for the treatment works and will benefit from a significant amount of enhancement and management for biodiversity, including dedicated areas for great crested newts.

“We are thrilled to have obtained planning permission for this solar project, which will contribute towards meeting the growing demand for renewable energy in Wales. The site will not only provide renewable energy to the Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works but will also help reduce carbon emissions and support the region’s transition towards a low-carbon future.”
The planning process for the project did not receive any objections from members of the public or any statutory consultee. Novus would like to thank the Wrexham County Borough Council and their officers for their proactive engagement and collaboration through the planning application process, as well as the ClwydPowys Archaeological Trust (CPAT) and Natural Resources Wales in helping refine the project and lead to a successful outcome.
Dwr Cymru will purchase power from the solar project under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and the parties will work jointly to deliver the new connection and development in early 2024.
